Hello, my name is Taylor Carson. I am a senior Communication (Digital Media Production) major, with a minor in English (Film and Media Studies,) at Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania. Currently, I am an aspiring communication professional seeking employment within the fields of admissions, graphic design, or marketing. During my time at Slippery Rock, I have been involved with a variety of wonderful clubs and organizations. These include Musical Theatre Society, Lambda Pi Eta (the national communication honorary,) University Program Board, and the First-Year Leader Scholar Program (FLSP.) My completion of the FLSP program rewarded me with a leadership certification from our former SRU President, Dr. Norton. Additionally, my involvement with Lambda Pi Eta has provided me with a number of leadership opportunities as secretary of the club and the leader of multiple committees. During April 2018, I will represent my university and organization at the Eastern Communication Association conference in Pittsburgh, PA. Furthermore, I have been named as a recipient of several awards and scholarships from local organizations and campus groups like the Alumni Association. All the while, however, I have maintained many jobs. For instance, I worked as a government teacher at a Christian high school in Mercer, PA. This job taught me a lot about instructional design, and as such, I am highly interested in the topic. I have also worked as a camp counselor, cashier, and sales representative. These experiences have gifted me with strong customer service skills and advanced organizational ability.
My education at Slippery Rock has benefited me in many ways. This year, as well as the previous three, I was named a Top 20 Presidential Scholar for my class. I am also a Dean's List member and 4.0 student. These distinguished accomplishments awarded me the opportunity to enter a speaking competition for SRU's Student Honors Convocation. For this competition, I was the College of Business' sole representative and a top 4 finalist. Schooling is not my only focus, however, I maintain many hobbies. Photography and music have long been passions of mine. I have even done some minor freelance photography work to accompany my graphic design history. Regarding my experience with graphic design, I have designed a number of different types of graphic media for companies across the Butler County area. In addition to design work, I have also produced a variety of video-based pieces. Recently, a music video I produced for my Editing for Video course was selected to be featured within the Student Research, Scholarship, and Creative Achievement Symposium on campus. The event is accompanied by a publication featuring works displayed at the Symposium. Therefore, a short abstract regarding my music video will also be published. Following an essay I wrote for my Writing About Electronic Media and Film class, this is my second publication. The essay I constructed during the fall of 2017 was featured within the university's film journal, The Roxy. As for the music video abstract, it can be found within the Journal of Scholarly Endeavor. My personal accomplishments are also accompanied by meaningful work experiences. Most notably, I have been interning with AVI Foodsystems' marketing department at Slippery Rock for approximately 1 year. I will continue to be employed there throughout my final semester at the university as well. This internship has provided me with vast amounts of graphic design experience, videography and photography work, social media marketing strategies, and extensive experience in event planning/ market research.
